Free Credit
Reports Online
If you
want access to free copies of your credit reports from
the major credit agencies, you can get them online
quickly and easily--and you won't need to spend a
dime to do it.

You
can get a free copy of each of the three major reports on
you once per year as a byproduct of federal
legislation. That's right, you're
entitled to see your credit scores and reports for free
every single year. There's no obligation
associated with this legally-authorized free "consumer
pull". You
just need to go to the official government backed web
site (www.annualcreditreport.com) and follow the simple
instructions.
But
that isn't the site that's doing all of that advertising
with the catchy theme songs. There are other
providers for free credit
reports available online.
Generally
speaking, these services tend to be on the up and
up. They
will secure copies of your credit reports for you and it
won't cost you a penny. Yet all of that
advertising costs money. So, how are
these companies making a profit by giving away
reports?
They aren't. They're making money by
selling subscription-based credit monitoring and updating
services. It
usually works like this: You request your free credit reports. As part of the sign-up
process, you're giving a free thirty-day trial membership in
their program. As
part of the sign-up, you provide the company with credit card
information. If
you fail to cancel within the thirty-day window, you start
paying them a monthly subscription fee until you do decide to
cancel.
Yes,
you really can get free copies of your information with
these services and it is possible to walk away
from the whole process without spending any
money. All
it requires is remembering to cancel your membership
subscription before time runs
out.
That
seems like more work than just getting the
government-backed freebies, though, doesn't
it? It
is. Most
people can probably get by without using these
third-party providers. However, there are
times when it makes sense to pull free credit reports from other
sources.
You
may have requested copies via the
legislatively-established option six months ago and would
now like to check on your status and progress, for
instance. You could wait another six months, or you could
just visit one of the free credit report services. That's
just one example of when requesting copies of your
reports from one of these companies may be a smart
move.
In any case, free credit reporting is the real deal. Everyone
should check their reports for errors and to find out whether
they need to take action to improve their credit scoring and
free reports make that process easier.
